As the 2024 Paris Olympics wrapped up over the weekend, the ceremony came to a close by throwing the Olympic responsibility over to Los Angeles, where the games will be held in 2028.
To celebrate the future site of the Olympics, a slew of artists got together for a pre-recorded performance in the City of Angels. Among them were Snoop Dogg — who spent the entire Olympics this year being an absolute delight — and longtime collaborator and friend Dr. Dre.
Speaking with ET’s Nischelle Turner on Monday, Dre, 59, said that teaming up with Snoop Dogg, 52, for a performance of their hit “The Next Episode” was a great time.
“It’s magical. I don’t even feel comfortable performing without Snoop,” Dre shared. “Something about the synergy that me and Snoop have is really interesting.”
“Really, Snoop, he’s the superstar. I’m the co-star when we get on stage,” Dre added. “It’s different when we’re in the studio, you know? I’m the captain when we’re in the studio, but when we go outside, Snoop is the guy.”
Dre and Snoop were part of an A-list lineup of performers that also included Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and H.E.R.
According to the music mogul, the pre-taped performance had to be a surprise for it to work, and somehow the producers in charge managed to make that happen.
“The Olympic Committee, they handled that. I was wondering how they were gonna do that and nobody had cell phones or anything like that. It was filmed the day before it aired,” Dre explained. “So trying to keep that a secret for that amount of time seems like it would’ve been impossible, but they made it happen!”
As for making things happen, Dre revealed that he and Snoop are also collaborating on a new album.
“Me and Snoop working together again, and it’s been 30 years, believe it or not. I’ve only produced one album with Snoop, which was Doggy Style, and that was 30 years ago,” Dre said. “We’ve done a lot of things in between and songs and performances and films and things of that nature, but this is my first time actually producing an entire album with him.”
According to Dre, it was “much more fun” this time around than when they were both much younger.
“We were kids at that time, you know what I mean? Snoop may have been like 18 or 19 years old and I’m, I think, I’m six years older than him. So we were kids at that time, and this one is gonna show a different level of maturity with his lyrics and with my music,” he added. “I feel like this is some of the best music I’ve done in my career.”
Snoop’s new album, Missionary, is expected to drop later this year.
Meanwhile, apart from the Olympics and a new album, Dre and Snoop have also teamed up for their own line of pre-mixed cocktails, of course known as Gin & Juice.
“It was a no-brainer,” Dre said of working with Snoop to create a beverage line. And, it was about more than just putting them names on a product.
“Like the head phones, its not something we just put our face and name on, you know?” Dre said. “I actually had to fly down to Chicago and go to this laboratory with a white coat on and create the gin from scratch. So its our gin, our own flavors in it… it’s easy and smooth.”
“we’re just having a lot of fun being creative,” Dre added of his partnership and friendship with Snoop.
